Saint Stephen's Tapestry
Saint Stephen's tapestry was commissioned around 1500 in Brussels by Bishop John lll Baillet for the choir of Auxerre Cathedral. The tapestry measures 45 metres long and is made up of twelve panels. It was woven with wool and silk.
The Tapestry tells the story of Christianity's first marytr, Saint Stephen, who was accused of blasphemy and then stoned to death for his support and belief and his faith in Jesus Christ of Nazareth as the true Messiah. Saint Stephen's last words were "Receive my spirit." and "Lord, lay not this sin to their charge." Thus he went to his reward as the first martyr for Christ.
The tapestry recounts the discovery of St Stephen's corpse three centuries later and its epic transportation to Rome in 23 episodes.
This tapestry is currently on display at the National du Moyen-Age" in France.
